Two children died in separate landslides in Chattogram on Wednesday as continuous heavy rain triggered soil collapses in different areas.
The first incident happened around 9:00am in Jangal Salimpur of Sitakunda upazila. A section of a hillside collapsed onto a house, trapping 10-month-old Ashraful Islam, also known as Tanvir, under the soil. He was found dead.
His mother, Lamia Akter, was also buried in the collapse. Local residents rescued her and she received first aid. She is now out of danger.
Later in the day, another landslide struck the Mayor Goli area of Chashma Hill in Chattogram city.
A 13-year-old girl, Samia Islam, was trapped after a hillside gave way. Rescue workers recovered her from the debris, but she could not be saved.
Continuous rainfall over the past several days has left many hillsides unstable, increasing the risk of further landslides across the district.
Authorities have urged people living near hills to move to safer places, warning that more landslides could occur if the rain continues.
