SANGSAD BHABAN : The government has announced plans to introduce a modern, competency-based MBBS curriculum by 2030, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI)-based medical knowledge and advanced clinical education systems.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury made the announcement while presenting the proposed national budget for FY2026-27 in parliament today.

The minister said reforms to medical education were necessary to produce skilled, humane and modern physicians capable of meeting future healthcare challenges.

“To produce skilled, humane and modern physicians, necessary reforms will be introduced in the existing MBBS curriculum,” he told parliament.

He said steps had already been taken to introduce an integrated modular approach, modern clinical education methods and the use of AI-based medical knowledge and technology in medical education.

According to the minister, an expert panel has been formed under the supervision of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) to modernise the MBBS curriculum and bring it in line with international standards.

“The Government aims to introduce a new, modern, competency-based and future-oriented MBBS curriculum by 2030,” he said.

Khosru said the BDS curriculum and allied health education programmes would also be updated gradually to meet evolving healthcare demands.

The finance minister further announced plans to make medical and dental education more accessible through the introduction of student loan and bank loan facilities.

He said a special loan programme was also being considered for talented students seeking higher studies abroad so that financial constraints do not hinder academic advancement.

Alongside curriculum reform, the government plans to undertake a comprehensive infrastructure development programme to transform government medical colleges into modern, quality-assured and education-friendly institutions.

The minister said academic buildings, laboratories, libraries, dormitories, hospital facilities and training infrastructure at older medical colleges would be upgraded to create an improved learning environment for future healthcare professionals.

The proposed reforms form, part of the government's broader effort to modernise medical education and strengthen the country's healthcare system through a highly skilled workforce.

The medical education reforms were announced as part of the government's broader healthcare agenda under the proposed FY 2026-27 budget.

The budget allocates TK  69,409 crore to the health sector, nearly doubling last year's revised allocation and reflecting the government's special emphasis on healthcare development and human resource capacity building.

The finance minister today unveiled a TK  9.38 lakh crore national budget for FY2026-27 .
The proposed budget is around 19 percent higher than the original TK 7.90 lakh crore budget for the current fiscal year and aims to stabilise the economy, accelerate growth and strengthen public services.
