BRAC University staged the first performance of Rabindranath Tagore’s classic play “Raktakarabi” at the Merul Badda campus today (Thursday, 20 August 2026), marking the institution’s first full-fledged theatrical production. The performance was organized as part of the university’s 25th anniversary celebrations, a press release said.
The production was the result of months of preparation and rehearsal, with students taking on responsibilities well beyond acting. Working under the guidance of theatre staff, they were directly involved in stage management, production, organization and creative planning throughout the process.
The play was directed by Shreyashri Sarkar. The production was supervised by Dr. Mahfuza Helali, associate professor of BRAC University’s School of General Education.
The event was organized by Student Life, the Office of Co-Curricular Activities, and the Drama and Theatre Forum of BRAC University.
Ekushey Padak-winning actress Lucky Inam inaugurated the production by lighting a ceremonial lamp. She commended the students’ acting, stage design and lighting, noting that such initiatives strengthen creativity, confidence, teamwork and cultural practice among young people. She also called on universities across the country to create more space for art, literature and cultural expression.
The inaugural performance was attended by Registrar Dr. David Dowland, Dean of the School of General Education Samia Haque, Head of Student Life Tahsina Rahman, faculty and students from various universities, and notable figures from Bangladesh’s cultural community.
“Raktakarabi” is regarded as one of Tagore’s most powerful symbolic works, exploring themes of human freedom, dignity, and resistance to oppressive power. Through the production, BRAC University students engaged directly with a significant chapter of Bengali literary and theatrical tradition, bringing it to a contemporary stage.
The second and final performance will be held tomorrow (Friday, 21 August 2026).
This initiative reflects BRAC University’s commitment to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), fostering cultural heritage and creative expression among the next generation.
