The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the sudden and tragic accident involving a gas cylinder explosion and fire at the Pretty Group factory in the Jamgora area of Ashulia, Savar, yesterday (Sunday) evening, a press release said.

BGMEA prays for the salvation of the souls of those who lost their lives in this horrific accident and extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families. At the same time, the organization wishes for the speedy and full recovery of those who sustained severe burns and injuries.

BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan stated, “Standing by the injured individuals and the affected families during this crisis is our foremost priority.”

Immediately upon receiving news of the accident, a special BGMEA crisis response team and delegation visited the site and provided comprehensive support to the Fire Service and Civil Defence during rescue operations. No regular garment workers were injured in this accident.

In the wake of this unfortunate incident, BGMEA has taken the following measures:

1.    Medical Support: A BGMEA medical team is closely monitoring the situation to ensure proper medical care for the injured and burn victims admitted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and local hospitals. BGMEA is coordinating closely with the Pretty Group authorities regarding the necessary medication and treatment for the injured.

2.    Formation of an Investigation Committee: BGMEA is forming a high-level investigation committee to determine the actual cause of this unfortunate accident and to examine safety lapses regarding the unloading of such cylinders or gas lorries, with the aim of preventing the recurrence of similar incidents.

3.    Safety Directive: The BGMEA is issuing an urgent circular requiring strict adherence to the highest safety protocols regarding the unloading, handling, and storage of chemicals, gas cylinders, and flammable materials across all ready-made garment factories in the country.

The BGMEA firmly believes that safeguarding workers’ lives and ensuring overall workplace safety—especially in the wake of any industrial accident—is among the organization’s top priorities. At this critical juncture, the BGMEA expresses its sincere gratitude to the relevant government departments, the Fire Service and Civil Defence, and the local administration for their prompt response and fearless rescue operations.
