A discussion titled ‘Revisiting the July Uprising’ was held at Eastern University. The Honorable Member of Parliament for Dhaka-19 constituency, Dr. Dewan Mohammad Salauddin, was present as the chief guest at the event. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the students, teachers and all the concerned of all the universities of the country including Eastern University for their outstanding contribution to the July Uprising, a press release said.
The Honorable Member of Parliament praised the ‘Alliance of Universities in Ashulia’ consisting of five private universities of Ashulia. At this time, the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University presented the goals, activities and future plans of the Alliance to the Honorable Member of Parliament. In light of the Alliance’s proposal, the Honorable Member of Parliament officially declared the Ashulia region as a ‘Higher Education City’. At the same time, he called on all concerned, including the university administration, to work in coordination with the government for the planned development and implementation of this city.
The program was presided over by the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University, Professor Dr. Farid Ahmed Sobhani. In his speech, he emphasized on creating new employment opportunities for university students. Abul Kashem Haider, Founding Chairman of Eastern University and Member of the Board of Trustees, spoke as a special guest. The university’s Registrar Dr. Abul Bashar Khan delivered the welcome speech at the program. In addition, the university’s Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Shamsul Huda spoke. Students who participated in the July Uprising shared their experiences and memories at the program. In addition, Md. Belayet Hossain, father of Shaheed Shakil Parvez, and Md. Mannan Gazi, father of Shaheed Shravan Gazi, expressed their emotional feelings. In their speeches, various aspects of sacrifice, struggle and self-sacrifice during the movement came up.
The speakers at the discussion meeting remembered with deep respect the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the July Uprising and paid deep respect to the courage of the injured and the fighters. They said that the July Uprising is an unforgettable chapter in the democratic history of Bangladesh, which has further strengthened the expectation of establishing a non-discriminatory, just and accountable state. They also emphasized the need to properly convey the history, spirit and values of the July Uprising to the new generation. At the end of the program, special prayers and prayers were held to pray for the forgiveness of the souls of the martyrs of the July Uprising and the speedy recovery of the injured.
The program was moderated by Omar Faruk Tamim, a lecturer in the Law Department of Eastern University. The overall coordination was by K. M.
