The police have arrested two members of a gang involved in the robbery of a private car by beating the driver in Mirsarai, Chittagong. The stolen private car has been recovered.
The incident took place on Sunday (July 26) afternoon in the area adjacent to the CP intersection of the Economic Zone Road in Moghadia Union No. 11 of the upazila. Today, Monday (July 27), the Chittagong District Police gave this information in a press release.
The two arrested are Sheikh Mohammad Al Yasa (30) and Jobeda Khanam Chowdhury (45). Police say they are members of an organized robbery gang. Another person named Sheikh Md. Jahangir (41) is absconding in this incident.
According to the police and the case report, Md. Selim (43), a resident of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila, is a private car driver by profession. Yesterday afternoon, three people hired his car from the Alankar Micro Stand in Chittagong City. Later, they went to the economic zone area of Mirsarai.
When they reached about 200 yards east of the Ansar check post adjacent to the CP intersection at around 4:30 pm, the three people tried to strangle the driver by tying a towel around his neck. At one stage, they beat him up, threw him out of the car in a seriously injured condition, and tried to escape with the private car.
Upon receiving the information, the Mirsarai police station quickly went to the scene. With the help of local people, the police conducted a raid and recovered the hijacked private car and arrested Sheikh Mohammad Al Yasa and Jobeda Khanam Chowdhury from the scene.
According to the police, during the raid, a thread cutter, an injection syringe, a white anesthetic-like liquid in a vial, a narcotic liquid in a bottle, and a towel were recovered from the two arrested.
Citing initial interrogation, the police said that the arrested persons had been renting private cars for a long time, posing as passengers, taking them to secluded places and attacking the drivers and robbing them. Later, they would sell the stolen cars to a gang involved in buying and selling stolen cars.
Police said that the arrested Sheikh Mohammad Al Yasa and the absconding Sheikh Md. Jahangir are brothers. Jobeda Khanam Chowdhury is Jahangir's wife.
A case has been registered at Mirsarai Police Station based on the complaint of the plaintiff. Police said that an operation is underway to arrest the absconding accused and identify other members of the gang.
