Rangpur police, bKash hold workshop against online gambling, fraud

As part of ongoing efforts to make Mobile Financial Services (MFS) more secure while preventing their misuse in online gambling, fraud, and other criminal activities, a workshop titled “Investigation and Prevention of Misuse of Mobile Financial Services” was held in Rangpur. A total of 45 investigating officers of the district police attended this day-long workshop, organised by Rangpur district police and bKash, at the police lines hall room. The workshop sheds light on how law enforcement can leverage transactional data to identify criminal gangs and bring them to justice, a press release said.
To date, 4,500 officials from various law enforcement bodies have benefited from these sessions held across the country.
Mohammad Mozammel Haque, Superintendent of Police, Rangpur, attended the workshop as the chief guest. On behalf of bKash, EVP and Head of External Affairs Major AKM Monirul Karim (retd.) was present at the workshop.
The workshops featured detailed discussions on leveraging technology to track customers’ lost funds, preventing offences such as online gambling, fraud, and kidnapping through digital transaction monitoring, and establishing swift communication channels between investigating officers and bKash officials. In particular, the session highlighted how MFS transaction data can be utilised to trace financial trails and apprehend individuals or syndicates involved in online gambling and other cybercrimes. Additionally, the session emphasised immediate protocols to follow when a criminal incident occurs.
Notably, every transaction can be monitored and tracked as each digital transaction leaves a footprint. This allows investigative bodies, including the Police, DB, CID, and PBI, to carry out the investigation process more accurately. In this regard, bKash has been continuously organising workshops titled “Investigation and Prevention of Mobile Financial Services Misuse” with different stakeholders since 2017.
