DHAKA : BNP Law Affairs Secretary and senior jurist Barrister Badruddoza Badal today said the statement made by 18 Deputy Attorneys General (DAGs) and Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs), who submitted their resignation letters, was a political ploy.

"Seven DAGs and 11 AAGs backed by the Islamic Lawyers' Council and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami have resigned from their posts. It was undesirable that they brought political issues as reasons behind their resignation. Their statement is entirely politically motivated. We did not expect such remarks from them," he said while talking to reporters on the Supreme Court premises this noon.

Barrister Badal further said, "The interesting thing is that our colleagues who resigned yesterday served as law officers under this government for four months and received salaries and other benefits. After four months, they felt that it was time to resign, or perhaps they thought they might be removed. That is why they brought some political issues into the matter, which is very unfortunate."

He also questioned whether the resigned law officers had worked in favour of the government or acted against its interests during their four-month tenure.

He suggested that the files they handled during the period should be reviewed, alleging that despite receiving salaries, allowances and other benefits from the government, they resigned and later took a stance against it.

"It did not appear to me that they had worked at the Attorney General's Office to protect the government's interests; rather, I believed they had acted against those interests. The accusations brought by the resigned law officers were baseless and politically motivated, and their own statements reflected political motives behind their allegations," he added.
