After a gap of nearly 52 years, the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society's Narayanganj Unit has held its executive committee election for the 2026–2028 term. The election has raised hopes of revitalising the organisation, which had remained largely inactive and stagnant for a long period.
The voting took place in a festive atmosphere at the Narayanganj District Council office on Saturday (October 31), from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Of the total 1,184 registered voters, 338 cast their votes through secret ballot to elect their preferred candidates.
Advocate Nabi Hossain was elected vice-president unopposed, as no other candidate contested the post. Meanwhile, Abu Al Yusuf Khan Tipu was elected general secretary, securing 298 votes.
In the executive member category, Maksudul Alam Khandaker Khorshed (Ballot No. 5) secured the highest number of votes, with 299.
The other elected members are Md. Zakir Hossain (Ballot No. 2), who received 281 votes; Advocate Sarkar Humayun Kabir (Ballot No. 1), 275 votes; Riyad Mohammad Chowdhury (Ballot No. 4), 263 votes; and Fateh Mohammad Reza (Ballot No. 3), 218 votes.
Among the defeated candidates, Nirab Raihan (Ballot No. 6) received 110 votes, Md. Harun-or-Rashid Khan (Ballot No. 8) secured 91 votes, and Mohammad Nazmul Haque (Ballot No. 7) received 87 votes.
The election, held after more than half a century, has generated fresh enthusiasm among Red Crescent stakeholders in Narayanganj. They hope the newly elected executive committee will restore dynamism to the humanitarian organisation and strengthen its voluntary and public welfare activities.
