As part of its social responsibility, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has continued its humanitarian assistance activities to the people affected by the floods caused by incessant rains and landslides in Chittagong. This relief program is being implemented for the flood-affected people under the initiative of BGMEA Acting President Selim Rahman and under the supervision of Acting Vice President Enamul Aziz Chowdhury, a press release said.
As part of this program, on July 14 and 16, respectively, BGMEA officially handed over 200 bags of relief materials to Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali and Chittagong District Police Superintendent Md. Masud Alam, BPM, so that they can be quickly delivered to the flood-affected people.
The relief materials were handed over by BGMEA Acting Vice President Enamul Aziz Chowdhury, Director and Former First Vice President S. M. Abu Tayyab, Director MD. M. Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Former Director Khandaker Belayet Hossain and Chairman of various standing committees of BGMEA Odud Mohammad Chowdhury, Kazi Md. Shafiqul Islam (Titu), Arshad-ur-Rahman, Riaz Waiz and Bashir Uddin Ahmed. Senior officials of CMP, District Police and BGMEA were present at the time.
While receiving the relief, CMP Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali and Superintendent of Police Md. Masud Alam, BPM praised this humanitarian initiative of BGMEA. They said that the relief materials will be delivered to the affected families in a fair, transparent and orderly manner as soon as possible.
Earlier, on July 15, the chairmen and senior officials of various standing committees of BGMEA visited various flood-affected unions in Banshkhali and Satkania upazilas of Chittagong and distributed necessary relief materials among thousands of affected families.
BGMEA leaders said that it is a moral and social responsibility to stand by the helpless people in any disaster and critical situation in the country. They said that the integrated participation of the private sector along with government initiatives is very important in dealing with disasters.
BGMEA has always played a leading role in the development of the ready-made garment industry as well as in fulfilling its social and humanitarian responsibilities. Such assistance activities will continue in the future as well.
