The Department of Architecture at North South University (NSU) organized an event titled “Meet the Parents” for freshers of Batch 262 on July 9 at 1:30 p.m. in Auditorium 801. The meeting aimed to strengthen communication between the department and guardians regarding students’ academic progress, challenges, and the support required for their academic development, a press release said.
Ar. Shahriar Iqbal Raj, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department, warmly welcomed the invited guardians and highlighted the distinctive nature of architectural education. He explained that architecture differs from many other academic disciplines because it demands creativity, dedication, perseverance, and extensive studio-based learning. He also reaffirmed the department’s commitment to maintaining close communication with guardians to better understand students’ academic experiences and the challenges they encounter throughout their studies.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Saiful Islam, Professor, and Ar. Rishaad Mohammad Yusuff, Lecturer; and Md. Muhtasim Galib, Lecturer, from the Department of Architecture. The faculty members discussed the department’s teaching philosophies and evaluation methods, emphasizing that assessment in architecture often involves professional judgment based on creativity, craftsmanship, design development, and the overall quality and impact of students’ work.
Drawing on his 21 years of experience in the Department of Architecture, Professor Raj spoke about the diverse career opportunities available to architecture graduates. He shared inspiring examples of alumni who have achieved success in a wide range of professional fields and encouraged guardians to support their children while allowing them the independence to develop into responsible, confident, and capable individuals.
During the interactive discussion session, guardians raised questions and shared their perspectives on student learning, studio culture, transportation, and the importance of motivation and guidance. Faculty members assured the guardians that students are always encouraged to seek academic and personal support from their teachers whenever needed, and they reiterated the department’s commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Professor Raj also highlighted several facilities and initiatives available at NSU, including research opportunities, sports facilities, healthcare and pathology laboratory services, and mental health counseling. He further informed the guardians that the university is currently developing a Fabrication Lab to enhance students’ hands-on learning and practical skills. He emphasized that NSU remains committed to continuously improving its academic environment and student support services.
Professor Saiful emphasized students’ ethical commitment and their motivation to work hard to achieve their academic goals, while Rishaad and Muhtasim explained the requirements and core values of the architecture education system.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment from faculty members and guardians to work collaboratively to foster students’ academic excellence, creativity, well-being, and future success in architecture. The Department Chair concluded the session by offering light refreshments to all participants.
