Export operations have officially commenced for the first
time from BEPZA Economic Zone-2, established under the Bangladesh Export
Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) in Mirsharai, Chattogram. With this
milestone, BEPZA Economic Zone-2 has entered its operational phase, bringing
the total number of operational industrial zones under BEPZA- comprising 8 EPZs
and 2 Economic Zones to 10.
Lee’s Tobacco Machinery Company Ltd., the first exporting
enterprise of BEPZA Economic Zone-2, received its inaugural Export Permission
from BEPZA on September 3, 2026. Following this, on September 8, 2026, the
company exported tobacco machinery worth at US$ 50,000 to Indonesia, marking
the official launch of export activities from BEPZA Economic Zone-2.
The UAE and Singaporean owned company signed a land lease
agreement with BEPZA on February 3, 2025. Currently, the company's total
investment stands at US$ 3.72 million, employing 29 officers, staff, and
workers.
At present, among the 18 enterprises allotted industrial
plots in BEPZA Economic Zone-2, Lee’s Tobacco Machinery Company Ltd. is the
first to begin commercial operations. Additionally, 3 more companies are
expected to begin production and export activities very soon, while the
remaining 14 enterprises are currently under construction.
The first export to Indonesia also opens up new
possibilities for expanding Bangladesh’s trade with the country. In this
regard, Md. Whaheduzzaman, Executive Director, BEPZA Economic Zone-2, said,
“The volume of exports from Bangladesh to Indonesia is comparatively low. In
this context, the commencement of exports from BEPZA Economic Zone-2 to
Indonesia is expected to contribute positively to expanding Bangladesh’s export
market and diversifying its export destinations.”
