Chattogram Port’s operations have accelerated, with
revenue income increasing by about Tk 1,000 crore in a year. At the same time,
container and ship handling has increased, and the waiting time of container
ships at the outer anchorage has decreased. However, there has been a slight
decline in total cargo handling.
According to the Chattogram Port Authority, the port’s
revenue income in the six months from January to June of the 2024-25 fiscal
year was Tk 2,947 crore 82 lakh. In the same period of the 2025-26 fiscal year,
it increased to Tk 3,947 crore 69 lakh. That is, revenue increased by Tk 9,999
crore 87 lakh in a year, which is about 33.92 percent more.
Not only income, but revenue expenditure has also
decreased during the same period. Revenue expenditure in the first six months
of the 2024-25 fiscal year was Tk 1,446 crore 24 lakh. It decreased by Tk 1,391
crore 51 lakh in the same period of the current fiscal year. This has reduced
the cost by 547.3 million taka or 3.78 percent.
Container and ship handling are increasing, Container
handling at Chattogram Port has seen positive growth till August 11 of this
year. While 2.41 million TEUs of containers were handled in the same period of
2025, it has increased to 2.144 million TEUs during the same period of this
year.
Ship handling has also increased at the same time. While
2,588 ships were handled in the first seven months and 11 days of 2025, it has
increased to 2,635 in the same period of 2026. That is, ship handling has
increased by 47 in one year, which is about 1.8 percent.
Ship waiting time has decreased by 70 percent, The biggest
change in port operations has been the waiting time of container ships. In
2025, a container ship had to wait an average of 4.08 days to enter the port.
This year, that time has decreased to 1.23 days.
That is, in just one year, the waiting time of ships has
decreased by 2.85 days or about 70 percent.
Port officials say that the waiting time has decreased due
to coordination in jetty management, faster container unloading and increased
operational efficiency.
Turnaround time has decreased, The ‘turnaround time’, the
time it takes for a ship to return after completing the necessary activities
after arriving at the port, has also improved.
In 2025, the average turnaround time of a ship was 2.60
days. This year, it has decreased by 2.28 days. That is, the time has decreased
by 0.32 days or about 12 percent.
However, there has been no major change in the time spent
at the port or dueling time of imported containers. In 2025, this time was an
average of 9.56 days. This year, it has decreased slightly by 9.51 days.
Total cargo handling slightly decreased, Although container
and ship handling increased, there was a slight decline in total cargo
handling.
From January 2025 to August 11, 2025, 84.21 million metric
tons of cargo were handled at the port. During the same period this year, it
decreased to 83.51 million metric tons. That is, cargo handling decreased by
almost zero.7 million metric tons.
New record in export container shipping, Meanwhile, Chattogram
Port has set a new record in export container shipping.
On August 12, 933 boxes of export cargo loaded containers
were shipped from Jetty No. 11 of General Cargo Berth (GCB) to Maersk Line’s ‘Maersk
Bintulu’ ship. These containers contained 1,784 TEUs of export goods.
According to the port authority, this is the highest
record so far in the shipment of export cargo loaded containers on a single
ship. Earlier, on June 18, a record was set for a single ship to load 742 boxes
or 1,439 TEUs of export containers.
In addition, another 144 boxes of empty containers were
loaded on the ‘Maersk Bintulu’ ship, which is equal to 147 TEUs. In total,
1,077 box containers were loaded on the ship, which amounts to 1,931 TEUs.
Syed Refaet Hamim, Secretary of the Chattogram Port
Authority, said that container handling and revenue revenue have increased at
the port in the last six months. They expect this progress to increase further
throughout the year.
Overall, the increase in container and ship handling,
reduction in ship waiting time and turnaround time, and cost control have
resulted in positive changes in the overall operations of the Chattogram Port.
