Around 1,000 passengers aboard the Cox’s Bazar-bound Tourist Express were left stranded for several hours on Tuesday after heavy rainfall submerged a section of the railway track in Chattogram, disrupting train operations on the route.
The train came to a halt near the Sholashahar area at around 12:40 pm after floodwater accumulated on the tracks, making it unsafe to continue. As of 3:15 pm, the train remained stranded, while railway authorities were unable to specify when services would resume.
The Tourist Express departed Dhaka's Kamalapur Railway Station at 6:15 am and reached the Sholashahar area shortly after noon before encountering the waterlogged section of the track.
Railway officials said continuous rainfall caused water to rise rapidly over the railway line, forcing authorities to suspend train movement to ensure passenger safety. Earlier in the morning, another Cox’s Bazar-bound train had passed through the same section without any difficulty before conditions deteriorated.
The Tourist Express was scheduled to arrive in Cox’s Bazar at around 2:40 pm, but the delay has significantly disrupted its timetable. Officials said the train will resume its journey only after the water recedes and the affected track is inspected and declared safe for operation.
The disruption also affected rail traffic on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar route, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation as efforts remain focused on restoring normal train services.
